The Balkan isn’t a major tourist destination as other European countries. Still, there are more and more people visiting this region. There’s a good reason for that – the countries situated in the Balkan peninsula are amazing tourist spots filled with great architecture, delicious food, rich culture, and the best part of all because they are all affordable.

1. Lake Bled

Lake Bled is truly one of the most beautiful lakes in whole Europe! No matter what time of the year you visit it, this place promises a picturesque landscape. It lies in the Julian Alps, in the northwest part of Slovenia, and here it adjoins the small town of Bled. This place is perfect for relaxation, as you can walk around the lake, admire the crystal clear water and the greenery surrounding you.
2. Plitvice National Park
The Plitvice National Park is home to the same waterfalls, and we assure you that these are unforgettable! You have probably heard so many times about Dubrovnik or Split when it comes to Croatia, but Plitvice is another attraction that you would regret not seeing it. We’re talking about 16 lakes and 90 waterfalls, water with the most amazing turquoise color – this is a view that will take your breath away!
3. Mostar

Located in Bosnia and Herzegovina’s southern part, Mostar is a small town that will charm you completely. We’ll start with Stari Most, which literally means old bridge – it was built in the 16th century, representing the most important architectural landmark in the town. The river Neretva flows through the bridge that connects the two sides of Mostar. However, there’s more to be seen, so go ahead and visit this beautiful town!
4. Lake Ohrid
Lake Ohrid is one of the oldest lakes in North Macedonia and Europe as well. Since 1980, it is declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the small town of Ohrid is situated on the lake’s border. Visiting this place will be a wonderful experience no matter when you would go, but note that in summer there are more events, parties, and tourists in general, so the atmosphere is more vibrant. Once you go there, make sure to visit the local churches, taste the Macedonian cuisine and enjoy the lake’s beauty!
If visiting the capital, rent a car in Skopje or hire a driver and go on a road trip to Ohrid for a bigger adventure.
5. Plovdiv
Plovdiv is one of the oldest towns in Europe, and by some literally the oldest. The town is also called the City of the Seven Hills because it is built on seven hills around the Maritsa river. Being such an old town, there are many important historical parts in Plovdiv, as there are many remains of the Roman Empire. Plovdiv is an affordable tourist destination that promises a lot to tourists. Many events are going on over there – no wonder why some call it Bulgaria’s cultural capital!

Kotor is a small seaside town located in Montenegro, and it is the place where you definitely would like to visit your summer vacation. There are many reasons why you should visit this town – the blue, clear waters of the Adriatic Sea, the wonderful architecture with old houses and the port, the delicious food and wine… The list goes on and on! As of 2017, the town of Kotor has declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
7. Ksamil

More and more people get to know the wonderful beauty within Albania. This country has breathtaking beaches to see, and it’s no wonder why the number of tourists just gets bigger each year. Ksamil is one of the places that you should see. It’s a village located in Southern Albania’s riviera, and the nearby islands are called the same. The islands and the town as well are part of the Butrint National Park.
8. Meteora
You’ve heard so much about Mikonos, Santorini, Crete, Athens, and the list can go on and on when it comes to summer fun with beaches and sea in Greece. However, not that many people know about a wonderful attraction in the center of the country – we’re talking about Meteora. It is a rock formation where one of the largest Eastern Orthodox churches is situated, and its position makes things even more beautiful. Meteora is declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
9. Brasov
Brasov is one of the most visited towns in Romania, and there is a reason for that – it is a home of amazing architecture, warm spirit, and wonderful food. It is an ancient town, and therefore it will be easy to see signs from all the centuries that Brasov has been through. You must visit the Town Square surrounded by small, colorful baroque houses and the Black Church, which is the largest Gothic church in Romania.
10. Pristina
Pristina is the capital of the youngest Balkan country – Kosovo. It doesn’t have an architecture that will take your breath away (unless you’re a fan of former Soviet architecture). Still, there are more and more improvements in the city, making it more tourist-friendly and beautiful in general. Pristina has an amazing vibrant atmosphere that promises a lot – not to mention that the food is amazing!
