Palm reading or palmistry can be found all around the world in many different cultures. In ancient times it has been practiced in the cultures of India, Tibet, China and Persia.
According to some, it has its roots in Indian astrology and Roma fortune-telling. Palm reading is used to analyze someone’s personality and also to tell his or her future by reading the person’s hand.
While it is not a proven science it’s still a lot of fun to check-out those lines on your palms more closely. We have collected ten basic palm reading principles and steps. Read on and start analyzing your hands and to gain more insight.
Which hand to read?
via dev.easypeach.com
Palmistry distinguishes between the active hand and passive hand. If you are right-handed, the active hand will be your right hand and your left hand is the passive one. For left-handed people their left hand will be the active one. In general the passive hand shows the inherited characteristics and the potentials we were born with. The active hand shows what we have accumulated throughout our lives. If there is a big difference between the two palms it can mean that the person will take or took a step towards life-changing decisions and shows self-development.
Identifying the major lines

There are many lines on our palms but usually the major ones are the most visible. These are the Heart Line, the Head Line, the Life Line and the Fate Line. Not everyone has a Fate Line though. It is a major line that runs from the bottom of your palm near your wrist, up through the center of your palm towards the middle finger. To define the meaning of it is more difficult than the other major lines. In general this line indicates the degree to which a person’s life is affected by external circumstances beyond their control. It shows challenges you will face on your life path, regarding school and career choices and reflects circumstances beyond your control. A deep Fate Line means that your life is strongly controlled by fate and breaks and changes of direction often represent changes in life from external forces.
If you can’t make out the lines hold your hand under bright light and cup your hand slightly.
Analyze the Heart Line
This line is usually the first that gets examined by a reader. It represents love and attraction and indicates the emotional stability and romantic perspectives. Crosses, breaks or chains on this line suggest periods of sadness and sorrow or depression. A straight and short line – short if it begins under your middle or after your middle finger – indicates a person who is less interested in romance and needs more freedom. A straight and long line (if it begins below the index finger) indicates a personality content with love life who considers others’ feelings. Curved and short line represents a reserved personality, someone who prefers small group of friends to big ones. A curved and long line indicates that the person can freely express emotions and feelings. If it curves upward towards the index finger it indicates a warm-hearted, reasonable, and affectionate personality.
Decipher the Head Line
This line indicates the type of intelligence a person possesses, as well as the learning style and communication approach. This line starts at the edge of the palm under the index finger running across the palm towards the outside edge. A gap between the beginning of the Head Line and the beginning of the Life Line shows whether the person is a risk taker or rather more cautious. When these lines are joined at the beginning, the person has a more cautious personality. The bigger the gap is, the more confident, risk-taking the individual is. A curved line is associated with creativity and spontaneity, while a straight line is linked with practicality and a structured approach.

This major line is believed to represent not only the person’s vitality and physical health but also reflects major life changes. According to modern palmistry the length of the Life Line does not represent the length of a person’s life. A long Life Line represents a responsible and dependable personality, someone who stays strong during difficult times. A Life Line that ends near the center of the palm considered to be short and often represents a person who can be easily manipulated by others. In general a faint line means lower energy levels and a deep line means more vitality. A broken line shows sudden change in lifestyle, due to struggles or losses.
Determine the shape of the hand

Another basic area that palm readers look for when analyzing your hands is the shape of the hand. Each hand shape is associated with one of the four elements and thus they represent certain personality traits. There are four general shapes of the hand depending on the length of the fingers and the length of the palm. The palm is measured from the wrist to the bottom of the fingers. Let’s see them one by one.
The Earth Shape
The Earth Shape hand is characterized by a square palm and short fingers. If the vertical and horizontal measurements of the palm are roughly equal, we are talking about square palm. The fingers are considered short when the length of the middle finger is less than three-quarters of the length of the palm. People with Earth Shape hands are usually practical and responsible. Often, they have connection to nature and they are down-to-earth. They have solid values and they tend to be straightforward.
The Fire Shape
Long palms and short fingers define the Fire Shape hands. The palms are long if the vertical measurement is longer than the horizontal measurement. If the length of the middle finger is equal to the length of the palm – or greater than three-quarters of it – the fingers are long. These are the hands of spontaneous, enthusiastic and optimistic people. They tend to be risk-takers with action-oriented and extroverted personality and plenty of confidence and positive attitude.
The Air Shape

The Water Shape
Long palm, long fingers and fine lines are the characteristics of the Water Shape hands. These are the hands of creative and intuitive people. They tend to be emotional, a little naive and moody as well. Often they are more introverted and quite.
